Top 10 ways to make money as a Photographer

1. Take photos – Clearly this is going to be the main way that you make money.  Whether it is weddings, portraits, commercial or architectural this will generally be how you earn a living.

2. Sell your images – There are many photographers who sell their images via websites such as redbubble or through art galleries. Perhaps you could sell greetings cards – there are a number of ways of doing this, sell them direct from your own site, through Etsy, notonthehighstreet or even eBay

3. Monetise your blog – Sign up for ad sense and Amazon.  Recommend books via links to amazon - people click on the link, buy the book and you get a little bit of commission.

4. Run courses/workshops – you’ve probably spent a fortune on courses over the years, you’ve read all the books and you spent hours perfecting your art... why not teach that to newcomers or even Mum’s who want to get the best out of their own photography

5. Write an eBook – this is possibly one of the easiest things to do but also one of those things you’re most likely not to do.  The topic of pricing for photographers is a highly debated one – what’s your take on it and how do you arrive at your pricing?  Other photographers will pay you to find out how you do it?

6. Coaching/mentoring – become a business coach or mentor to a newbie photographer.  We all need help with marketing and sales, so why not use your vast experience to help someone else.

7. Sell on eBay – buy and sell photography equipment on eBay.  Most equipment doesn’t loose too much value and its usually fairly small so easy and cheap to send by post.

8. Get sponsored - Let companies pay you to put their banners and advertising on your blog or website.  Offer related companies advertising space on your website or the chance to get a paid review for a photography related product?

9. Stock photos – Take photos specifically for the stock photo market.  Get an account with Istockphoto or similar and read up on what they’re looking for.  There are many books out there and websites which can advise you on how to do this.

10. Create templates/Actions in Photoshop – sites such as Design Aglow and Album Cafe are very popular and successful.  If you have a good knowledge of Photoshop and often make your own templates why not?
I’m pretty sure there must be loads of more ways that you can make money from being a photographer, be creative...that’s what you do!
